Cobblestones & Belgian Blocks

Cobblestones & Belgian Blocks (Belgium Blocks) are the oldest masonry products used for paving stones and edges. Cobblestones have rounded edges as a result of originally being cut from river rocks, but anything cut with rounded edges can be considered a cobble shape as manufactured paving stone companies produce their own cobble shaped products. Belgian blocks are cut from granite and are truly block shaped. They used to be used for ship ballasts on vessels that primarily traded between America and Belgium. That earned them the names Belgian or Belgium blocks even though they don’t originate from Belgium.

If you are looking for an “old world” feel for your project then using cobblestones and belgian blocks for your paving stones and edges is the way to go. 9 Brothers Building Supply stocks a collection of high quality manufactured and natural cobbles & blocks from top brands and distributors. What are Cobblestones?

Cobblestones are stones with rounded edges. They are cut from river rocks, typically, but any type of stone with a rounded edge may be considered a cobblestone. Several manufactured cobble-shaped products are sold as cobblestones.

Typically, cobblestones are brick-like with rounded edges, which were originally used throughout the streets. Today, you can still find many cobblestones in historic towns. However, most cobblestones are used in hardscaping today.

What are Belgian Blocks?

Another old masonry product, Belgian blocks are cut from granite and have a block shape. They were originally used for ship ballasts. They don’t actually come from Belgium, even though they may be called Belgium Blocks.

Belgian blocks are large rectangular blocks of stone. They can be 10″ to 12″ in length and height. These stones are commonly used for borders, paving, and in many different landscaping projects.
